Labial growth and asymmetry may result from environmental or genetic factors and may affect young women as early as their teens and early twenties, or it may develop later as a result of child rearing and physical changes. It may be due to thickening and/or stretching of the labia and it may result from chronic irritation with clothes that are too tight. Most of the time, however, it is a congenital issue. Some women are unsettled by the length of their labia, an aesthetic issue for which reduction labiaplasty is effective. There are times when the labia becomes elongated due to hormonal changes associated with pregnancy or due to the mechanical stretching during vaginal delivery. In some cases the labial hypertrophy is isolated to one side and is called unilateral labia hypertrophy or simply referred to as labial asymmetry.

Women who experience embarrassment or sexual dysfunction because they have over-size labia minora and labia majora have often been rejected for treatment by their primary care physician or their gynecologist. No matter how distressful or uncomfortable large labial anatomy may be, there seems to be medical doctors who ignore the concerns of their patients who want surgical help, citing their concerns as not being of medical necessity. Certainly there is a wide variation of normalcy to the vulvar structures but these women feel their anatomy is not normal and seek elective procedures to make their lives more comfortable or to improve the appearance of large labia or even an enlarged mons pubis. They seek help usually because they are embarrassed of their appearance and want to look more 'normal'. Unfortunately, many doctors have chosen either not to learn about how to help these women, or they don't perform the proper reconstructive surgery or they may fail to refer individuals for needed surgery to a cosmetic gynecologist.

Cosmetic Vulvar Reconstruction is the elective surgical enhancement of the vulvar structures (labia minora, labia majora, mons pubis, perineum, prepuce andintroitus). Reduction of Excess prepuce (excess skin along the sides of the clitoris) Women tell us that they want the skin to drape neatly over the clitoris. The reduction of the excess prepuce provides the desired aesthetic enhancement of the clitoral skin. The majority of women having reduction labioplasty need the reduction of excess prepuce for a complete aesthetic result. There are not many who are aware of or skilled in the techniques for a prepuce reduction but to not have this done while resculpting the labia minora is a disservice to the woman who now has an unusual anatomic appearance rather than a natural appearance she was hoping for. Reduction Labioplasty with combined reduction of the thickness of the labia minora. Some women note that due to childbirth, aging, or genetics the labiaminora are too wide or thick.
